BIO

I’m an independent documentary filmmaker based in Victoria, Australia.

For more than twenty years, I’ve worked across directing, producing, cinematography, editing and photography, developing a practice grounded in long-form observation and visual restraint.

My work is intimate and shaped by a commitment to character-driven, observational storytelling. Working predominantly in a vérité mode and frequently alone or with minimal crews, I like to create conditions of trust and proximity that allow complex human experiences to unfold with nuance and emotional clarity. Marked by atmospheric imagery, quiet humour and a sensitivity to moral complexity, my work is concerned with finding humanity within difficult terrain.

In 2019, I received the Doc Edge Film Festival awards for Best Director and Best Emerging Filmmaker for my debut feature documentary Camino Skies, an examination of grief and pilgrimage.

My second feature documentary, Gloriavale (2022), a true-crime Australia–New Zealand co-production investigating an insular religious community in New Zealand, was selected for the Cannes Marché du Film Docs in Progress and released across Australia and New Zealand to critical acclaim.

An advocate of what I describe as “slow filmmaking,” I avoid extractive production models in favour of sustained engagement and ethical collaboration. I believe that stories of consequence require patience, care and responsibility - an approach that prioritises the wellbeing of participants and collaborators, and results in greater access, cinematic integrity and trust.

While singular in my vision, my practice is inherently collaborative.
I work transparently with production partners and in close dialogue with participants and communities, seeking respectful and considered ways to translate lived experience to the screen.

Hard As Puck (2026) - A new film that I’ve produced and shot is having its world premiere at the 2026 Melbourne International Film Festival, and I’m currently developing a music documentary about legendary Aussie troubadour John Williamson.

When I’m not making my own films, I’m freelancing as a cinematographer - helping other talented directors bring their visions to the screen.

When I’m not making films or freelancing, I’m generally stressing about paying bills so give me a call - I’d love to work together.
